There goes the alarm…! It’s 6 am already and it’s time to start the day. I get up, fix breakfast for my husband who leaves for work by 7:15, stuff his tiffin box, see him off and then heave a sigh of relief. Finally, I will have my 30 odd minutes of exercise for myself. I start some warm ups, stretch my arms a bit, try a simple Yogasana and hear my two-year-old wailing in bed. And then I see my precious exercise time go for a toss! I bet this is the same routine for every woman, for whom home is more important than anything else. For working professionals too, this is almost the same story everyday, where they are unable to squeeze in time for exercise. There could be a number of reasons why your workout schedule does not work for you.
You are trying too hard:
Like me, who despite doing everything in my power to find time for workout, cannot even complete a single yogasana. Why is that? The answer is that I’m being too desperate to exercise. You must never think of exercise as a task. It is something one should do in their leisure time. Workouts are supposed to be enjoyed. It is only then that the schedule starts to show positive results in the body. Otherwise, it only mounts extra pressure in your head.
You are not trying at all:
Now when I set my routine, there is always a hitch in the schedule. Either my son will make sure I don’t work out at all or I will have visitors at ungodly hours. And if such hindrances pop up on an everyday basis, I stop bothering about exercise entirely. You need to remember, there are a few minutes in the whole day to stretch a leg, do some hopping on the spot, try some neck exercises and bend a bit while you are warming up food in the microwave. Exercising does not mean only treadmills, lifting weights, pumping muscles in the gym and the like. A simple back relaxation is also an exercise.
You ‘miss out’ your exercise regimen some days:
Finally, everything is in place. Husband is off to work, child is having a sound sleep; there are no visitors to knock on the door and this is the relaxed period every day. Now I have all the time in the world to exercise. But guess what? There is a slight nip in the air today and the weather is a bit cold. What do I do in such a situation? I tuck myself under the warm bed sheet instead of sipping a cup of tea and getting to ‘work’! This is what you need to avoid at all costs. Like I said, never think of exercise as a task. Shun that cozy feeling out of your head and get going!
You are repeating the same routine:
Now for those who strictly follow an exercise routine, you need to know that like toothpaste brands need to be changed frequently, else bacteria get immune to them; exercises too need to be changed for the body gets used to one routine. So if you stick to cardio for too long, your body will stop showing results. Combine cardio with yoga and also fit in some treadmill workouts so that your body responds to different workouts.
Your diet remains the same:
You want to pile up a few kilos but despite all the heavy workouts you do sincerely, you are in for disappointment all the time. The reason behind it is that you are not changing your diet. You include only carbs and proteins in your diet, which are simply not enough to gain weight. A combination of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats, fiber and water is what you need on a daily basis. Once you start including all these nutrients in your daily diet, only then will you able to achieve the desired results.
Like the above mentioned reasons, there could be a number of other reasons why your workout regimen does not work out for you. All you need to do is pinpoint your weak spots and work on them. Once you are fully prepared, start working out. Always remember, exercise is not just for putting on weight or burning your calories. There is more to it than just that. It is a fun activity, which along with showing positive results in your body, shows a change in your behavior and overall personality. Enjoy your workout; love the way you exercise and always find atleast 5 minutes from an entire 24-hour schedule to shake your body out of its routine. Only then will your workout schedule start working out for you!
